A good quality home is not only concerned with its lay out but also the quality of raw material matters a lot.

Sand quality evaluation/ assessment

Sand is the basic element that should have some qualities. Like all other materials, sand has certain properties that define its quality. Good quality sand does not contain more than 4% dirt. Good quality sand consists of small stones and is free of clay balls and unwanted material. Sand particles usually range in size from 1/16 mm to 2mm. According to the size, it is divided into a thin, thick and medium type.

Thick sand is used for underground water tanks and columns, medium size sand is used for plaster and thin size sand is used for plaster finishing.

Builders and supplier take advantage of our limited knowledge and sell us low quality sand.

There are several ways to test quality of sand. Few of them are as follows:

  • Take a small amount of sand in a glass of water, shake it well and wait for the sand to accumulate under the glass, you will see that dust and other particles come to the top of the glass.
  • The second method is to add sodium hydroxide to the water and you can check the quality by seeing the color change in the mixture.
Brick quality assessment

  • Bricks should not have cracks and surface defects.
  • Bricks should be of same size and shape.
  • The edges of the bricks should be compact and even.
  • When it is scratched with a nail, the surface should remain as it is without any scratches.
  • Good quality bricks do not absorb more than 5% water.

  • When you rub the cement between your fingers, it should be smooth.
  • The initial setting time of the cement should be less than 45 minutes and the final time should not be more than 10 hours if it is good quality cement.
Stone/ crush quality assessment

In general, if the soil or dust accumulates in comparison to the cement when crushed, it does not stay with it at the time of strengthening. That is why good quality stone should be used as it is durable and strong and can form a perfect combination with cement. The following are some criteria to test its quality:

  • Crushing should take different forms and should not be smooth.
  • It should not contain dust or any other unwanted material.
  • There should be no color on it.
  • Since it is mixed with water after crushing, make sure that the water is pure and has no chemical composition.
Steal quality assessment

Steel should have the following properties:

  • It should be free of cracks.
  • The surface should be as rust-free as possible.
  • Given all steel bars should be equal.
  • Steel must be stored in a suitable place.
  • Keep it away from wet place.
  • Keep it in a dry and shady place.

Test:

You can do a simple test to check the quality of the steal. This is called a turn test. In this test, a steel rods bends at an angle of 90 to 350 degrees and then straightens again. If the rod retains its original shape and there are no cracks, the quality is excellent.
